Chuck Burks
chuck_burks Studio owner and instructor Chuck Burks is from Little Rock, Arkansas and has been teaching yoga since 1991. He has taught Hatha, Iyengar Restorative, and Vinyasa Flow classes in Los Angeles, Palm Springs and on Maui.

Chuck completed yoga teacher training with Rod Stryker of PARA YOGA and has completed 200-plus hours of massage training. Chuck’s professional background is in dance and musical theatre, and he brings the grace and joy of these experiences to each of his classes. His intuitive sequences and gentle, encouraging instructions help yogis find their personal connection to healing through yoga.

chuck2 One of the most personal aspects of Chuck’s teaching, and one he’s most passionate about, is working with people living with HIV. “Yoga supports people with HIV by helping them tap into their body’s natural healing resources to repair and rejuvenate cells. This is true for anyone but for someone living with HIV, their immune system weakens over time. Combining current treatments with yoga and breathwork helps support and strengthen the immune system Yoga is about opening up the flow of energy in the body. When that energy moves freely, we can tap into the body’s natural healing resources to repair and rejuvenate our cells. HIV is a chronic disease that can have a lasting impact on a person’s immune system. The practices of pranayama (breathing techniques) and asana (physical postures) are designed to help support and strengthen the immune system.

The physical challenges are only half of the equation. “There’s an emotional/mental side we sometimes don’t talk about,” Chuck says. “Even with all the information we have, there’s still a stigma attached to HIV. People are afraid of being thought of as “less than”. I encourage everyone — and especially students working through the challenge of living with HIV — to invest in a daily meditation practice. Those few moments of quiet, of being present and using your breath to still troubling thoughts, can really make a difference in your emotional health.”

In addition to daily Gentle Yoga and Energetic Yoga classes, Chuck guides weekly Yoga Nidra, Mala Meditation and Chant classes, teaching yogis to use these ancient techniques to self-heal.
